Civil Engineer

Benefits to Secondary industries

The construction industry relies on architectural and engineering services for the design, planning, and execution of construction projects. These services support secondary industries involved in architecture, engineering consultancy, and design software development.

Where do you live?

I live in a large regional centre .

What are some important skills?

I spend a lot of time meeting and talking with clients, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders so it is important I can communicate well, in person and in writing. I do many projects so project management skills are crucial for overseeing construction projects from start to finish. This includes skills in planning, scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, and coordination to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the desired quality.

What is your favourite part of your job?

I enjoy the satisfaction of working with my hands and seeing tangible results. In construction, we have the opportunity to work on physical projects, create structures, and contribute to the built environment.

What are the main tools of the trade?

I use hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, chisels, tape measures, levels, utility knives, and hand saws. These tools are used for tasks such as measuring, cutting, fastening, and general construction work.

What training have you had?

I have a Bachelors’ degree in civil engineering.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

The construction industry is embracing various technologies that are likely to continue to advance and transform the sector. This includes building information modeling (BIM), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and drones for surveying and monitoring. Robotics, automation, and 3D printing may also have a greater impact on construction processes, improving efficiency and productivity. So I will still be in the construction industry.
